OpenXport Message Broker

OpenXport is a low cost Java/XML based message broker designed for use in enterprise environments. It provides a cost effective alternative, or extension to, more costly messaging middleware technologies from other suppliers. At the core of the product is the open source openadaptor™ framework. The openadaptor framework was developed by Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein and has been deployed as enterprise middleware by other leading financial institutions including Deutsche Bank and Abbey.

OpenXport combines the strengths of openadaptor, with software developed by Modcomp. It provides a middleware connectivity layer allowing organisations to integrate legacy and non-legacy applications.

OpenXport provides the following functionality:

  • message transfer
  • routing
  • safe storage of messages in transit
  • mechanisms for defining and setting up message queues
  • command, control and supervisory facilities
  • management and control of message queues
  • message audit trails
  • recovery facilities
  • archiving and retrieval
  • the ability to scale

OpenXport provides a seamless interface to different technologies, including; application servers such as IBM WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss and BizTalk; databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, and Informix; and other middleware such as IBM WebSphere MQSeries, Tibco, Microsoft MQ, and Java Messaging Service.

The Ability to Scale

OpenXport is very configurable and modular in design; this modularity allows OpenXport to scale very easily. When necessary, multiple instances of OpenXport can be configured for efficient parallel processing of messages.

Encryption

OpenXport allows applications to send data as standard self-describing messages. To prevent the unauthorized viewing of messages on the network, data can be encrypted based on the type and content of the data. Components exist that will decrypt data objects that have been encrypted. These pipe components have been designed to support different encryption algorithms.

Fail Over and Recovery

OpenXport is most often deployed as a business critical application. The message broker is likely to be at the hub of the application. In such environments, high availability is a must and the design of any message framework has to be resilient. OpenXport has built in resilience and fail-over. It can also be deployed in a highly resilient hardware configuration.

Management Console

OpenXport uses a standard web browser to access all the administration and management facilities. This management console enables the administration of OpenXport from any network connected point. The management console provides control, configuration, reporting, diagnostics and customisation.

In short, OpenXport provides an alternative for organizations looking for a reliable, scalable and cost effective messaging middleware solution, for tactical or strategic implementations.
